Oh! Guide: Carly Rowena

We sat down with Carly Rowena (@carlyrowena), a personal trainer and fitness blogger, to explore what it means to be happy and healthy. From practicising self care to creating a daily wellness routine, Carly shared some of her personal tips to cultivate self love and healthy habits.

What does self love and self care mean to you?

To be comfortable with making your needs a priority. Too often, we get caught up in the aesthetics of ourselves but not with the what is truly going on underneath. It’s that type of self care that will not only help you realise your potential, it will also give you the opportunity to give more love to those around you. For me, self care is going offline and having a day away from the normal. Reading a book to my daughter at whatever time of day she decides she wants to.

How do you create a daily wellness or self care routine?

Consistency creates routine but we’re all working too hard on changing everything, which is why we usually fail. I always tell my clients to aim to improve one thing per week and then before you know it you’re a month in with 4 new habits! It’s also so much more positive to think about what you can add to your life instead of what you need to remove.

We believe that what we put inside our bodies impacts how we look and feel on the outside. Thoughts?

100%! We all have delicious cravings, yet we have all experienced how rubbish we can feel when we over indulge. I love my food and will never stop myself from eating something but I know I run better on nutritiously packed meals rather than simply snacking because I’m lacking time to prepare.

What advice do you have on creating healthy habits?

Make them small and take it slow. Habits only last if you enjoy them and they can actually fit into your lifestyle. Take a look at your diary, the free time you have, and the things you truly want to be able to do for yourself. See if they can all fit together.

Name your top three skin secrets.

Water, Tropic Rainforest Dew serum and SPF.

What have you recently learned becoming a Mum?

That the kids are only little for such a short period of time. Everything is a phase and so precious. You get so caught up in wanting your old life back, feeling like your wings have been clipped, wanting them to sleep and to eat that you forget the first year is the fastest. Cherish every hug and new thing they learn.

What advice do you have for female entrepreneurs and aspiring leaders?

Know your purpose. It’s so easy to be swept away by comparison and without realising become a carbon copy of the people you’re following or inspired by. Know your purpose, review it every year and grow with the passions that fuel you.

Ohana Wellness Festival is on International Women’s Day, we are excited to celebrate women around us. What female leaders inspire you? How do you support women around you?

I’m lucky to have a fabulous support network of women around me. I have to admit that the women who inspire me are the ones I coach. They’re ready to inspire change and step out of their comfort zone. Hosting my retreats is my favourite part of my job as I get to watch a group of women grow together, make changes and step in a new direction, it’s so motivating!

What wellness trends are you excited about in 2020?

I’m just so happy to see people talking about switching off as much as switching on. For so many years, we’ve been obsessed with doing everything perfectly, eating clean, having the perfect balance, doing more and more when actually we’re all just burning out. I’m ready for more of us to be talking about self care and taking time for ourselves in the real world.
